Satellite Connectivity: On Wednesday, Vodafone Idea (Vi) announced a strategic alliance with AST SpaceMobile. The US-based satellite technology company will help Vi launch direct-to-device satellite broadband connectivity in India. With this move, the telecom operator aims to expand broadband-based cellular service in regions with difficult terrain. These are areas where building terrestrial infrastructure is a challenge. The new service will connect directly to smartphones using AST’s SpaceMobile Satellite System. It will not require device support, firmware updates, or specialized software.
Vi SpaceMobile Satellite System:
Vi said in a press release that AST SpaceMobile’s space-based cellular broadband ecosystem will extend its terrestrial connection telecom services to offer internet access, data streaming, and voice and video calls in remote areas and difficult-to-reach places throughout India. Through a network of satellites in orbit, consumers will be able to directly access 4G and 5G services. Notably, the service will supplement current terrestrial networks rather than replace cellular services.

Vi Official Statement:
According to Vi, the nation’s Digital India initiative is in line with its direct-to-device satellite-based internet connectivity. Through the strategic agreement, AST SpaceMobile will design, build, and oversee the constellation of satellites, while the telecom operator will provide market access, operating spectrum, and interoperability with terrestrial networks. “We are excited to usher in a new era of seamless and resilient connectivity as satellite-based mobile access becomes a reality in India,” said Avneesh Khosla, Chief Marketing Officer at Vi, in a statement.
One notable example is the SpaceMobile Satellite System. It is a cellular broadband network built on satellites, intended for use by both government and private entities. Users can access its network even in remote locations, without needing to change their devices. This is possible due to its low-Earth orbit satellite constellation. There is no need to switch cellular service providers to use this service. In areas where traditional cell-site coverage is limited or unavailable, it partners with telecom carriers to offer additional connectivity. Vi and AST SpaceMobile will collaborate on commercial initiatives across consumer, business, and IoT (Internet of Things) sectors. They will also provide direct-to-device satellite broadband connectivity.
