Chaya Nayak: Longtime Meta executive Chaya Nayak has declared her intention to join OpenAI, leaving the social media behemoth. The retirement of the Indian-origin employee is a significant loss for Mark Zuckerberg, who now has to deal with the task of replacing a key AI researcher at Meta.
Nayak recalled how she began with the Data for Good effort and looked back on her ten years at Meta in a thorough LinkedIn article. My first few weeks on Facebook seem like they were yesterday. I joined to support the launch of Data for Good, an initiative to demonstrate the potential benefits of data and AI/ML for the global community. My career was built on what began as a daring attempt,” she wrote.
Who is Chaya Nayak?
Nayak revealed that she worked on projects that tackled global issues while holding important positions at the social media behemoth throughout the years. “With Disaster Maps, Meta allowed me to create products that helped communities in need,” she said. To allow researchers to conduct responsible platform research, she also oversaw the Facebook Open Research and Transparency (FORT) team, which concentrated on “data cleaning, differential privacy, and data clean rooms.”

Nayak oversaw several initiatives throughout her time at Meta. For instance, she worked on scholarly papers regarding Meta’s influence on democracy and also assisted with international reactions to the US 2020 elections. Moreover, building three generations of Llama and Meta AI became part of Nayak’s more recent work on generative artificial intelligence. She wrote, “I worked on GenAI for the past 2.5 years, creating three generations of Llama and Meta AI, solving challenging problems at breakneck speed, and speculating about the potential social implications of the next wave of AI.”
Furthermore, she highlighted her personal growth during this period. “I developed as a leader along the road. I gained self-assurance, the courage to pursue ambitious concepts, and the ability to bounce back when things didn’t work out. Above all, I developed a network of friends and coworkers who helped to mold and encourage me along the journey,” Nayak stated.
Chaya’s New Role in OpenAI:
“Today, I’m joining OpenAI to work with Irina Kofman on Special Initiatives – exploring new opportunities at the frontier of AI,” Nayak wrote in an announcement of her new position. To apply all I’ve learned to work that will help determine the future of technology and society seems like the ideal next step. “The adventure is far from over. “I’m simply turning the page,” she continued.
