What might seem like a minor inconvenience, such as plugging a wet charging port into your phone, can quickly turn dangerous, especially right after a sudden rainstorm. Wherever there is water, and electricity, bad things can occur. Be extra careful when charging a smartphone when wet or even humid.
In the monsoon season, the air is always moist. If your phone has even the slightest bit of moisture in the charging port, bad things will happen. When you plug in your charger, you are likely to create a short circuit. This may damage your phone motherboard or damage your charger.
In the worst-case scenario, it may create sparks, or even fire. Repairs can be expensive, and in some instances, they will never be able to recover the damaged product. Never charge a wet phone.
Many popular, modern smartphones feature an IP rating that makes them resistant to water, or at least splashes. Some common phones like iPhones, Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy S series have some sort of IP rating.
However, water-resistant does not mean waterproof. Mid-range phones to budget phones almost always feature a low level of IP rating. These devices will be susceptible to damage from any moisture getting in the charging port.
Even the phones that have higher IP rating will not guarantee water resistance if there is normally water entering the charging area. Internal circuits are sensitive, and they are an unstable environment to be in with moisture.
Ensure that your phone’s charging port is dry completely before using it. Air drying is best, but if you are in an emergency situation, use a clean dry cloth.
If your phone gets wet from the outdoors, resist the urge to plug it in right away. Give it a couple hours to dry off.
Your charger port can get wet just like your phone. If the USB plug is wet, it could fry out the charger and the phone.
Moisture can collect in wall outlets during rainy season. Connecting a device to a wet socket could create sparks or an electric shock.
Many of today’s smartphones have an alert if moisture is detected. An iPhone or Samsung Galaxy will provide an alert when water is present. The Google Pixel Android 16 will automatically disable USB charging when moisture is detected at the charging port, and will only allow charging after the port dries out.
For those with phones that do not automatically disable USB charging, you have to check before EVERY charging session.
