Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 10 on October 14th, 2025. This means that after this date there will be no more security or technical updates given to Windows 10. This could leave your PC vulnerable to security issues, viruses and other cyber-attacks.
There are two options ahead of you: to upgrade to Windows 11 or to continue using Windows 10 but you will need additional assistance.
Option 1: Upgrade to Windows 11.
If your device is capable of Windows 11, you can upgrade for free.
You can check this by going to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
If your device is eligible for an upgrade you will see a notice indicating you can install Windows 11 directly from there.
There are new features included, plus you will carry on receiving security support from Microsoft.
Option 2: Use Windows 10 ESU Program.
If you cannot upgrade to Windows 11, consider using the Windows 10 ESU program.
ESU means Extended Security Updates, which allows you to get security patches and updates for one more year.
Usually the ESU program lasts until October 13 2026.
Keep in mind that the ESU program only applies to Windows 10 version 22h2, so make sure you update if necessary.
Head to Settings > Update & Security > On your PC, select Windows Update and you will see something like enroll in ESU.
If you qualify, then Microsoft will allow you to enroll and pay . . .
It is possible that Microsoft could waive the charge if you back up your PC much of the time. You check your rewards points to see if you can use them for your access.
This is a great option for people whose PC’s cannot upgrade to Windows 11. Buying a new WIndows 11 computer can be exceedingly expensive. Instead you can pay $30 to protect your PC. That is so that you may save and prepare for a new system later.
The ESU program is security patches only and will not provide any new tools or features to your OS. There will be no customer support from Microsoft. There are no major changes to the OS. However, you get to protect your computer from new cyber security risks.
