YouTube launches a smart AI feature today. It operates alongside an age estimation tool to uncover children accounts. The AI will be able to identify which users are under 18 with ease. It will also block adult content recommendations for those users. Since Google imposes strict rules for their young users, this update will help protect kids while they are online. More about it below:
The AI will closely monitor activity on the account. It will monitor the videos searched and what they watched. It also analyzes what age was originally put in the account. By utilizing this information, the AI will be able to identify children. Adults will not be able to bypass this system. The AI will detect young users quicker than before.
Several users posted about the recent changes on Reddit. A pop-up appears on an account if the AI has flagged it as a minor account, notifying the user settings have been updated. The pop-up states age verification has failed. Many users shared screenshots online. 9To5Google discusses these changes on their channels. User feedback will help shape these new changes.
Often, kids create accounts using fake ages. Using an adult account, children can access adult videos without verification. YouTube had been promising to roll out the AI feature. In some respects, this is a response to limiting children from harmful content. YouTube has made child safety a priority and this is in part a response to emerging global rules.
The AI will change a credited child or suspected child’s account into minor mode. It will restrict mature content on that account with immediacy; if an adult accidentally accesses this feature, they can revert it back in the user settings. They submit birth certificates or forms of identification. The verification will restore access to adult content. Accounts without a verification will remain kid-safe.
Users upload government-issued identification or a selfie. Users can upload credit card information as well. The AI scans the documents and uses the information for a quick verification. Users will receive a verification within a few days. If the verification fails, the accounts will be locked as minor accounts.
Restrictions will stay until verification is proven.
YouTube confirmed that some adult accounts were wrongfully marked. They strongly suggested that families and those that reported the issue verify their ages. Only by submitting identification will they be able to switch back to an adult account. There are still kid restrictions for “unverified” accounts, and the age restrictions continue for adult content. YouTube, as well as the AI, will correct the errors quickly.
Check your own personal account settings today. Verify if you are prompted for age verification check marks. Only provide trusted documents when verifying your accounts. Report any issues to YouTube support. Keeping kids safe is always the right thing to do. Stay informed about the changes too.
AI is working to keep young viewers safe. The AI will block adult content if users are watching an account not their own. Enjoy your time on YouTube safely now!
