Are Dubbed South Indian Films Saving Bollywood? Nani Opens Up

Dubbed South Indian Films: Bollywood has not been doing well lately, with several movies tanking at the box office despite getting good reviews. Six out of the top ten highest-grossing Indian films of 2024 were South Indian, including Pushpa 2 and Kalki 2898 AD. This trend has also raised questions regarding whether dubbed South Indian movies are ‘saving Bollywood.’ Lead actor of HIT: The Third Case, Nani, was questioned about his take on this while in an interview with Siddharth Kannan.

Nani’s Take on the Issue

On being asked a question regarding whether South Indian cinema is ‘saving Bollywood,’ Nani gave a neutral perspective. He linked the fact that every industry is full of its own ups and downs, providing an example from the lows of Tollywood this past summer. “I feel saving is the wrong term. But I feel balancing it is the right term,” concluded Nani. He went on to reiterate that there was also a downbeat spell in Telugu cinema with the cinemas closing as the result of below-average performance in prime season. But he also said that industries always come back in new fervor, and so would the case with Bollywood.

The Universal Craving for Wonderful Films

Nani hinted that viewers nowadays are less discerning about what language a film should be, and more on the quality of the film. “The thing to be good about now is that everybody simply desires a great film, whichever the language is. Everybody simply wants a top class film,” he further mentioned. This change in the taste of the audience has urged filmmakers from all industries to go for the best. Nani tackled the question of the chances of the revival of Bollywood in a positive manner, pointing out that Hindi films have given us some of the best movies that have influenced generations.

Although South Indian cinema has completely swept the box office in recent years, Nani feels that they are not ‘rescuing’ Bollywood but are only balancing the industry during its slump phase. He looks at this as a chance to reflect and reboot, anticipating a big comeback for Hindi cinema. While people are still searching for good content, the emphasis remains on creating best-of-breed films that can cross language and cultural boundaries. The only doubt is not if, but when, Bollywood will bounce back.
