Not long ago, Siddhu Jonnalagadda was touted as one of the hottest Tollywood up-and-coming actors, particularly following DJ Tillu’s runaway hit. His youthful appeal, eccentric screen presence, and natural comic timing made him one of the most intriguing teenage actors of lately. Tides, however, changed very swiftly. Audience opinion seems to have cooled following Tillu Square, Telusu Kada, and Jack with successive huge disappointments; the main question now is: what went wrong?
Siddhu’s habit of repeating tonal and thematic patterns in his movies has drawn one generally accepted criticism. This actor has been wallowing in the same small comfort zone, be it chaotic-comedy-in-serious-situations (DJ Tillu, Jack) or relationship-drama-meets-panchayati (Krishna and His Leela, Telusu Kada). Siddhu has barely departed from the “Tillu template,” unlike Vishwak Sen who keeps experimenting with opposing roles. Many viewers see this likeness as leading to a stagnation of his professional path.
One of the most debated mistakes was to proceed with Tillu Square soon after the initial had become popular. While the sequel utterly lacked the spontaneity and freshness about DJ Tillu’s recipe, the first movie became a cult hit. The crowds that earlier had fun with the character now appeared cynical, as though the performer over-milked a single personality.
An other school of thought appears to contend that poor script choice and uneven performances exacerbated the situation. Many thought Siddhu’s acting was wooden or flat, while the scripts for movies such as Jack and Telusu Kada were not good enough. Weak projects and half-baked scripts have taken center stage from his skills even with the talent in him.
Industry observers think Siddhu may reset his image by choosing fresh and difficult roles, akin to Adivi Sesh, Tharun Bhascker, or Nani, who have been revitalized progressively. Star pressure-which is obviously a barrier in itself-is the antithesis of this; therefore, focusing on craft is absolutely essential.
If only he makes the correct decisions, Siddhu still has the capacity to come back.
