Nani’s Shocking Confession: Tollywood’s darling Nani recently expressed a dislike for the appellation “Natural Star.” While the sobriquet is a favorite among the fans and the industry, he has now come out and said that he would rather just be called “Nani.” His revelation came as a shock to everyone, given the tag had been stuck to his name for years. But the actor maintains that most of all he identifies with himself.
Nani’s actual name is Naveen Babu, but “Nani” has been his pet name since childhood. He mentioned that everyone—from his parents to his friends and family—calls him Nani, except for his teachers. Because of this deep personal connection, he wanted “Nani” to be his identity in films as well. Rather than a title that sets him apart in an exaggerated way.
This, according to the actor, is something he never attempted to do by going out of his way to pursue larger-than-life monikers or bigger titles. He would much prefer to be sincere than acknowledge glamorous tags, and so has repeatedly said that he wished to be only referred to by his name and nothing else as a matter of star branding.
The “Natural Star” title was first bestowed on Nani by director Samudra Kani at the release of Jandapai Kapiraju. Due to respect for the performance style of Nani, the director came up with the title “Natural Actor Nani” and emphasized it through graphics in the film’s credits. Nani did not want to use the tag initially. But he learned about it only after the release of the movie. As it was out of love, he did not make too big of a fuss about it.
Other directors wished to retain the title, and Nani continued to decline it, but directors did not give up. Gradually, he accepted the “Natural Star” title—not because he desired it but because it was bestowed upon him in love and respect. Today, he accepts it for the love and not as a means of indicating status.
