RRR receives Special Mention at 100th Oscars: The Academy Awards made history as they announced the new category Achievement in Stunt Design, one of the 100th Oscars for 2028. The historic new category will recognize the art and craft that goes into the action choreography in films of 2027. On its announcement list was also SS Rajamouli’s RRR, already making international news for the bone-crunching action sequences in the film.
The Academy shared the news with the statement: “Stunts have always been part of the magic of movies. Now, they’re part of the Oscars.” They took their official social media handles and shared a poster featuring the RRR film. They captioned the post, “Stunts have always been part of the magic of movies. Now, they’re part of the Oscars. The Academy has created a new annual award for Achievement in Stunt Design—beginning with the 100th Oscars in 2028, honoring films released in 2027.”
Director SS Rajamouli was ecstatic with the new category and the special mention for RRR. He tweeted, “Finally!! After 100 years’ wait!!! Delighted about the new Oscars stunt design category for films releasing in 2027! Heartfelt thanks to David Leitch, Chris O’Hara, and the stunt community for making this historic recognition a reality, and to @TheAcademy, CEO Bill Kramer, and President Janet Yang for celebrating the magic of stunt work. RRR, featuring Ram Charan and Jr NTR, has already been world-acclaimed, whether it was the Best Original Song Oscar for Naatu Naatu or any other awards. The action sequences in the film, well-choreographed and out-of-the-box, have been a benchmark for Indian cinema. To be included in the Academy announcement again speaks volumes about the fact that it is a world phenomenon.
