The Girlfriend Review: Rashmika Mandanna Shines in a Dark Relationship Tale

The Girlfriend Review:

The Girlfriend is a relationship drama that dives deep into the emotional world of a young woman named Bhooma Devi. With Rashmika taking the lead and Rahul Ravindran at the helm, expectations were naturally high. The film promised to explore the complexities of love, patriarchy, and self-realization but does it live up to that promise? Let’s find out.

The Girlfriend Review:

Story:

Bhooma Devi (Rashmika Mandanna) grows up without a mother under her strict father (Rao Ramesh), who strongly believes in patriarchal values. For the first time, she steps out of her father’s shadow to pursue her post-graduation in a city college. There, she meets Vikram (Dheekshith Shetty) and Durga (Anu Emmanuel). While Durga loves Vikram, he instead falls for Bhooma.

What begins as a sweet relationship soon turns toxic, forcing Bhooma into emotional turmoil. How she deals with the manipulation, escapes the suffocating relationship, and faces her father forms the crux of The Girlfriend.

Performances:

Rashmika Mandanna delivers one of her strongest performances. She carries the entire film on her shoulders with grace and emotional depth. Dheekshith Shetty is convincing as the cunning and manipulative boyfriend. Anu Emmanuel has a minor but impactful role. Rao Ramesh gives a decent performance, though his character could have been written better.

Technical Analysis:

Rahul Ravindran’s direction feels sincere but inconsistent. The concept is powerful, yet the execution falls short. The first half drags with unnecessary scenes, testing the audience’s patience. The background score and music are just average, and the cinematography fails to elevate the mood. The production values are decent, but the screenplay lacks tightness and emotional punch.

Detailed Analysis:

The film’s biggest strength lies in its intent — showing the dangers of toxic relationships and how women often lose themselves trying to please others. However, Rahul Ravindran struggles to make the narrative engaging. The first half moves at a snail’s pace, and the college scenes lack authenticity. Logic often goes missing — from the way post-graduate students behave to how certain emotional moments are portrayed.

The second half, especially the climax, redeems the film to some extent. The emotional closure between Bhooma and her father is touching and may connect with certain sections of the audience. However, the overall impact remains limited due to uneven pacing and weak writing.

Verdict:

The Girlfriend tries to deliver a strong message about emotional maturity and toxic love but ends up being half-baked. Rashmika’s brilliant performance and a few emotional moments are the only saving grace in this otherwise slow-paced drama.

Final Line:

A good concept let down by weak execution — The Girlfriend fails to make a lasting impression despite Rashmika’s sincere effort.
