Can You Travel Without a Train Ticket? Indian Railways Rules Explained

Travel Without a Train Ticket: If we talk about the rail network around the world, then Indian Railways is the fourth largest railway network, in which millions of people travel every day. Ticket is definitely required for traveling in the train, along with this, TTE also does his job well by checking the ticket. Apart from this, it is also very important to follow the rules of the railway, if the rules are not followed, then along with the fine, one has to suffer a penalty. In such a situation, there is a special rule for keeping and not keeping the ticket, let us know what to do if the ticket is lost by mistake or there is no ticket. Can one travel in the train even without a ticket? What rule has the railway made on this, let us know about it.

What do the railway rules say?

According to the Indian Railway Act, 1989, if a passenger is caught travelling without a ticket, he not only has to pay extra fare but also a penalty. The railway puts this situation in the category of ‘unauthorized travel’. If the passenger does not have a ticket, he can directly talk to the TTE in the train. The TTE will issue him a ticket from the same station from where he has boarded the train, but for this the passenger has to pay a fine of double the fare or a minimum of ₹250.

Is travelling without ticket considered a crime?

Yes, according to Indian Railways, travelling without a ticket is a legal offence. If a passenger deliberately does not buy a ticket and is caught, legal action can be taken against him under Section 138 and 155 of the Railway Act. In this case, a heavy fine is charged from the passenger and in case of non-payment, he is also sent to jail.

You can travel in the train by taking a platform ticket

Many times people board the train with only a platform ticket. Railway rules clearly state that a platform ticket only allows entry into the station area, not to travel in the train. If a person does this, he also falls in the category of those traveling without a ticket and will have to pay the full fine and ticket fare.

Travel by taking ticket from TTE

If you have forgotten to buy a ticket in an emergency and have boarded the train, you should immediately talk to the TTE. The TTE will issue a ticket to the passenger, but it will cost more than the normal fare. If the passenger tries to avoid the TTE and is caught, he will have to pay a higher fine.

General ticket is easy

If you don’t get time to make reservation in an emergency or want to avoid the hassle, you can take a general ticket. You will easily get general tickets both on the platform and mobile app. Every railway train has a general coach, in which you can travel without reservation with a general ticket. This coach is not comfortable, it is very crowded, but you can travel in less money without the hassle of reservation. There is no penalty for traveling on a general ticket, it is a reliable and valid option for travel in an emergency.
