This station, being constructed as part of Phase 2 of the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) project, is expected to create a new chapter in the city’s transport history.

The Marina Beach station is going to be completed in a few months. The government has already finalized the name for this station. This station is going to be named Lighthouse Metro Station. This station is part of Corridor-4, which runs from Lighthouse to Poonamallee under the Phase-2 expansion.

❄ Metro to Ease Traffic Woes:
Constructing a metro station this close to the seashore is a first for India. Typically, metro lines are planned in the inner city and high-traffic areas. However, Chennai CMRL has introduced a bold new idea with the concept *Waves Meet Railway*. The station at Marina Beach is designed not only to enhance tourism but also to significantly reduce traffic congestion in the area.

The Chennai Metro Phase 2 project is going to be one of the city’s major projects ever. This phase is going to be in a stretch of 118.9 kilometers, which is going to include three major corridors. In this Corridor 3 from Madhavaram to Siruseri, Corridor 2, which is going to be from Lighthouse to Poonamallee, and the last corridor 5, is going to be from Madhavaram to Sholinganallur. The Lighthouse station belongs to Corridor-4. Once this project is completed, it is expected to drastically ease city traffic. By 2030, daily metro ridership is projected to reach 1.5 million.

Marina Beach, the second-largest beach in the world, attracts thousands of tourists and locals every day. Having a metro station nearby will offer greater convenience to travelers. Instead of relying on MTC buses and taxis, which often contribute to traffic jams, visitors will be able to reach the beach directly via the metro. This development will further enhance Chennai’s tourism infrastructure.

❄ Faster Travel Ahead:
After the Lighthouse Station gets operational, people can travel from all the major stations to Marina Beach. This is going to reduce the traffic time by just 15 to 20 minutes. The main line of Corridor-4, including the Lighthouse Station, is expected to be partially operational by the end of 2026. Some segments may begin trial runs as early as 2025. CMRL estimates full project completion by 2028.
