Free Ticket For Women: The Mahalakshmi Scheme of the Telangana government has led to significant changes in public transport in state, and from a women’s transportation perspective, the suggestion that women and girls travel free in a TSRTC (Telangana State Road Transport Corporation) bus will ease travel in terms of convenience, cost, and safety. But the really important question is, will trans women also enjoy free travel?
Mahalakshmi Scheme was initiated for women mobility, gender equity, and economic independence. Eligible women can travel free of charge on state owned buses anywhere in the state of Telangana.
Many have asked if trans women are included in this welfare program. They are: trans women are also included in the Mahalakshmi Scheme and do not have to pay a fare when riding TSRTC buses.
This inclusion, is a step in the direction of gender inclusivity and equal rights, for the Telangana government. The inclusion of trans women as part of the women’s group guarantees they will have access to the same rights and respect. This also reflects the continuing attempt of the Telangana government to promote, not only social equality, but acceptance of the transgender community overall.
By establishing free bus service for trans women, the Telangana government has shown us a model that other states can probably follow. The Mahalakshmi Scheme not only enables women with mobility, but offers a message of inclusivity: every woman, regardless of their gender identity can have the same access and dignity in public spaces.
