Hard Case vs. Soft Case: Which Luggage Suitcase Is Best For You?

Hard Case vs. Soft Case: Which Luggage Suitcase Is Best For You?

Picking out a suitcase should be a simple task – but then you stand in the shop and see racks of bags in every conceivable shape, size and color and it all starts to get difficult. Will you choose a strong hard case for better protection or a soft case for more flexibility? The truth is that the “right” suitcase for you will depend on your style and where you travel.

That said, here is a simple guide to help you find the perfect suitcase for you.

Hard Suitcases: Tough and Secure
Hard suitcases are made from tough materials such as polycarbonate, ABS, or even aluminium. They will protect your breakables – like laptops, cameras, or glass. If your luggage will be jostled around (long flights, rough rides) that hard shell will keep everything packed inside secure.

They also lend themselves to good packing if you are someone that likes to lay your clothes out neatly. Many hard suitcases form compartments to separate your items.

Soft Case Suitcases: Light and Adaptable
Soft case suitcases are made of materials such as nylon or polyester. They can be squeezed into tighter spaces like aeroplane overhead bins, which is obviously useful if you only take hand luggage!

They also usually come with external pockets and zippers that allow you to expand the suitcase, if needed – if you’re the is not planned, last minute, packed to the brim and retail/restocked traveller!

What Matters Most When Buying A Suitcase
1. Where You’re Going.
Are you looking to have a city break, business trip or going on an adventure tour? If you are travelling long distances, or know your luggage will go through rough handling, you’re best off with a hard suitcase. Soft suitcases are suitable for shorter or more frequent flights.

2. What You Are Packing.
If you wish you to take hard items, I recommend a hard case. If you are packing a bit of everything, I recommend a soft case where there is some flexibility.

3. Weight Rules.
All budget airlines are strict on weight limits. Soft cases are usually lighter than hard cases, so you can fill your bag with more!

4. Materials and Durability:
Hard Case:
Polycarbonate: Strong and light
ABS: More affordable but less durable
Aluminium: Very strong but heavy

Soft Case:
Ballistic nylon: Strongest option
Polyester: Lightweight and affordable

5. Wheels and Handles:
Always choose a suitcase with spinner wheels with good mobility in all directions. Handle must be solid and not wobbly.

There is no one perfect suitcase for all. Some travellers even have one of each; a soft bag for carry-on airport travel and a hard bag for a more durable checked bag. Consider your travel style, the average packing, and how much you fly. Summarily, selecting the right suitcase will make your travels much smoother and easier when it comes to packing.
