For decades, India’s railways have operated entirely under central government control. But now a new chapter in Indian rail history has begun the country’s first private train started operating in 2019. This train is called the Tejas Express and it runs on one of the busiest routes: between New Delhi and Lucknow.

Although Tejas Express tickets cost more than most other trains, the train gives passengers a premium travel experience in return. The goal is to modernize India’s rail network and bring premium services to travelers. IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation) manages the entire service.

Tejas Express began commercial operations on the Delhi–Lucknow route on October 4, 2019. It connects Delhi and Lucknow, offering travelers a fast and comfortable option between the two capitals. In its first month, IRCTC earned about ₹7.73 lakh in operational revenue, proving that passengers are willing to pay more for quality travel.

Compared to other premium trains on the same route, Tejas Express charges higher fares. On the Delhi–Lucknow route, an AC Chair Car ticket costs about ₹1,679, and an Executive Chair Car ticket costs around ₹2,457. In contrast, Shatabdi Express charges about ₹1,255 for AC Chair Car and ₹1,955 for Executive Chair Car. Vande Bharat Express lists its AC Chair Car at ₹1,255 and Executive Chair Car at ₹2,415.

What makes Tejas Express worth the higher fare? The train offers modern facilities such as air-conditioned coaches, automatic doors, infotainment systems, Wi-Fi, CCTV surveillance, personal reading lights, and snack trolleys. The coaches, built at the Kapurthala coach factory in Punjab, include advanced technologies like steel disc brakes. They can run at speeds up to 200 km/h, though they currently operate at around 160 km/h due to track limits.

Many passengers believe the comfort, punctuality, and features justify the price. Tejas Express represents a major step toward transforming Indian rail travel, introducing a new standard of luxury and efficiency.
