Indian Railways Rules: Can You Sleep on a Side Berth During the Day?

Indian Railways Rules:

Indian Railways carries millions of passengers every day across short and long distances. For long journeys, sleeper coaches are the most used because they allow passengers to travel comfortably at night. In these coaches, seat arrangements are divided into main berths and side berths. Side berths are located next to the window, with only two seats that can be folded into a bed at night.

Indian Railways Rules:

Many passengers have a common doubt about whether they can sleep on the side berth during the daytime. People with side berths usually fold their seats into beds even before the night sleeping time. This creates confusion for other passengers and sometimes leads to arguments. To avoid such situations, it is important to understand what the official rules say.

According to Indian Railways regulations, all sleeper passengers are allowed to sleep only between 10 PM and 6 AM. These eight hours are officially dedicated to sleeping, and no one should disturb passengers who are resting during this time. Upper berth passengers must also allow lower berth passengers to sleep comfortably during this sleeping period. This rule applies to both main berths and side berths without any special exceptions.

During the daytime, sleeper berths are usually treated as seats, especially when the train is crowded. Passengers sit together and share space to make travel comfortable for everyone. Indian Railways has not issued any strict rule that completely stops someone from lying down during the day. However, the expectation is that passengers should be cooperative and considerate toward others.

If someone has a health issue, is extremely tired, or has a long journey, they can politely request nearby passengers to allow them to rest for some time. Good communication and mutual respect help in maintaining a friendly travel atmosphere. Train attendants can also help if passengers face any difficulty.

So passengers have full rights to sleep on their side berth from 10 PM to 6 AM. During the daytime, there is no strict ban on sleeping, but cooperation is necessary. By following simple manners, every journey in Indian Railways can remain pleasant and comfortable for all travelers.
