IRCTC New Rules: Top 5 Major Changes in Railway Reservation System

IRCTC New Rules:

The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has recently introduced new rules for train reservations. These updates focus on improving transparency, reducing misuse, and providing more convenience for travelers. Here are the top five changes every passenger should know.

IRCTC New Rules:
1. Advance Booking Period Reduced to 60 Days

Earlier, passengers could book train tickets 120 days in advance. Now, this has been reduced to 60 days. This change helps prevent long waiting lists and ensures fair chances for travelers who plan their trips closer to the travel date.

2. Aadhar Authentication Made Compulsory

To ensure genuine bookings, passengers now need to complete Aadhar verification and KYC while booking tickets on the IRCTC website or app. Only verified users can book Tatkal and normal reservation tickets. This rule came into effect on July 1, and from July 15, Aadhar OTP verification also became mandatory.

3. Tatkal Ticket Priority for Common Passengers

IRCTC has taken strong steps to stop misuse by agents. For the first 30 minutes after Tatkal bookings open, only common passengers can book tickets. Agents can book only after this window closes. This ensures that genuine travelers get first priority.

4. Earlier Chart Preparation for Better Planning

The railway department now prepares the passenger chart 8 hours before train departure, instead of the earlier 4 hours. This gives passengers more time to know their final seat status and make alternative travel plans if needed.

5. Option to Change Travel Date Coming Soon

One of the most awaited updates is the ability to change your travel date online without cancelling the ticket. This feature is expected to launch by January 2026. Passengers can modify their date based on ticket availability a move that will save both time and money.

With these new IRCTC rules, Indian Railways is moving towards a more transparent, digital, and passenger-friendly reservation system.
