Konkan Railway: In a move to ease road congestion, Konkan Railway has begun preparations to transport automobiles using train wagons. Chairman and Managing Director Santosh Kumar Jha revealed key insights into the initiative, which is currently in its early stages.
Although the plan is still under development, officials have confirmed that the system is technically feasible. Moreover, Jha indicated that implementation is expected soon, marking a significant shift in how vehicles may be transported across the region.
Ro-Ro Model:
Konkan Railway already uses rail wagons to transport trucks under the roll-on roll-off (Ro-Ro) model, which allows vehicles to be moved efficiently from one location to another. Railway staff load the trucks onto wagons using a dedicated ramp, ensuring proper alignment and safety. Before boarding, officials weigh and measure each truck, allowing only those up to 3.425 meters in height. Drivers and cleaners remain in their cabins during the journey, traveling with standard tickets. Trains only depart when at least 40 trucks are ready, ensuring operational efficiency.
Konkan Railway New Initiative:
Now, the railway plans to extend the service to include SUVs along with smaller automobiles. To accommodate these lower-profile vehicles, technicians will carry out additional wagon modifications, alongside enhanced security checks. Kolad’s existing Ro-Ro terminal will handle the operations, and vehicles will only be transported once a sufficient number is available. Konkan Railway has reduced its monsoon schedule by ten days, setting the operational period from June 15 to October 20. Officials have confirmed that the railway will implement strict safety measures during this timeframe to prevent accidents.

To monitor vulnerable zones, the railway will deploy nearly 600 trained personnel for round-the-clock patrolling. In addition, nine stations will be equipped with early warning systems featuring LED signals, enhancing real-time alerts. Engineers will also place flood warning systems at key river bridges to mitigate risks during heavy rainfall.
Meanwhile, the railway has selected Madgaon and Udupi stations for upgrades under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. Preparations are also underway to construct new tunnels at Pernem and Old Goa, with work expected to commence soon.
Travel Smart – Reduce Traffic:
Konkan Railway has launched a new Car Ferry project aimed at significantly reducing road traffic. By providing a safe, efficient, and convenient travel alternative, the initiative could revolutionize holiday commuting for travelers across the region.
Although the project remains in the testing phase, railway officials view it as a strong step toward enhancing passenger convenience, highlighting the organization’s ongoing commitment to innovation. Furthermore, the service will allow drivers to enjoy a smoother, stress-free journey, traveling comfortably from one destination to another.
