PM e-Drive: India’s ambitious PM e-Drive initiative is revolutionizing city transport by putting 14,028 e-buses in cities. Bengaluru has been the largest recipient until now with 4,500 e-buses under the green mobility drive, and Hyderabad and Delhi will get over 2,000 buses each.
Union Heavy Industries & Steel Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy recently laid out the distribution timetable for electric buses under the program. Distribution allotments are:
Bengaluru – 4,500 buses
Delhi – 2,800 buses
Hyderabad – 2,000 buses
Ahmedabad – 1,000 buses
Surat – 600 buses
The scheme will help improve public transport, reduce carbon prints and improve urban mobility in the country.
The Pradhan Mantri e-Drive program is a leap of quantum proportions towards pollution-free and efficient public transport. The scheme, costing ₹10,900 crore, would be implemented in two years (April 2024 – March 2026) to accelerate India’s green mobility revolution.
Replacing diesel buses with electric buses to curb pollution
Augmenting passenger experience with green-friendly, new-age transport alternatives
State-wide promotion of sustainable transport models
The fleet of buses of Bengaluru will be more than 10,000 vehicles very soon, a key milestone on the way to green mobility. Experts have urged planned augmentation for buses to run on high-demand routes and not based on commercial motives.
Although this project is encouraging, municipalities must invest in creating the charging systems necessary to provide power for the increasing number of e-buses. The government is working actively with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to support rapid deployment as well as optimal operations.
