Railway Ticket Rules for Children:
Many parents travel with their children by train during holidays or family trips. Sometimes, they think small children do not need a ticket. But Indian Railways has clear rules about tickets for children. Knowing these rules can help parents avoid fines and tension during the journey.
Children aged 0 to 4 years can travel for free in trains. But if parents want a separate seat or berth for the child, then they must buy a full adult ticket. This rule applies to AC coaches, sleeper coaches, chair cars, and other reserved classes.
For children aged 5 to 11 years, a ticket is required. Parents have two options:
They can buy a half ticket. In this case, the child has to share the parent’s berth or seat. While booking online, parents must select the NOSB (No Seat/No Berth) option.
They must pay the full adult fare, even if the child is under 12 years.
In classes like 2S (Second Seating) and CC (Chair Car), half ticket is usually not given. However, in unreserved coaches, half fare may be available for children in this age group.
Children who are 12 years and above are treated as adults. So they must have a full ticket and follow all adult ticket rules.
If a child travels without a proper ticket or without the allowed fare reduction, the Railway rules say a minimum fine of ₹250 will be charged along with the full fare for the journey. If the fine is not paid, railway authorities can file a legal case under Section 137 of the Railways Act.
So, before booking train tickets, parents should check their child’s age and choose the correct ticket option. For children under 5 years, ticket is only needed if a seat or berth is required. For 5–11 years, choose between half ticket or full ticket based on seating needs. For 12 years and above, full ticket is compulsory.
Following these rules ensures a safe and trouble-free journey for the whole family.
