Telangana to Get Two New Airports by 2027: Deets Inside

Telangana New Airports: Telangana is ushering in a new era in the aviation sector. As announced by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, two key airports at Mamunur on the outskirts of Warangal and Shantinagar on the outskirts of Adilabad are likely to be fully operational by the end of 2027. The government is preparing to invite tenders for the construction of these major projects by the end of this year. Currently, only Shamshabad Airport is available. These two new airports will give a significant boost to the state’s economy, commercial activities and tourism sector.

Mamunur area in Warangal has a long aviation history. Built in 1930 during the Nizam’s era, this airport served till 1981. After decades of waiting, the Telangana government is ready to expand Mamunur Airport. On July 31, 2023, the state cabinet officially approved this new airport. The central government has also given the green signal to develop it as a brownfield airport. While 696 acres of land is already available within the airport limits, the Telangana government has allocated Rs. 205 crore for the acquisition of an additional 253 acres of land required for expansion and is expediting the work.

The Roads and Buildings Department has written to the Airport Authority of India (AAI) to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) and designs for the construction of the airport. The Centre’s decision to develop this airport under the UDAN scheme further increases its importance. If it becomes available, travel facilities will improve for the people of northern Telangana, southern Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh.

Adilabad Airport, a decades-long dream come true

The dream of setting up an airport in Adilabad has also been around for a long time. Before independence, in 1930, during the Nizam’s era, an aerodrome was established on 369 acres of land to refuel fighter jets. The locals have long been demanding an airport for the development of the district. Fulfilling their aspirations, the central government recently granted permission for a civil airport in Adilabad. The green signal has also been received from the Indian Air Force (IAF), said state minister Komatireddy Venkata Reddy recently.

The Air Force has suggested that this airport be developed to accommodate the movement of civil aircraft and Air Force aircraft. Officials believe that if the 369 acres of land currently under the control of the Defense Ministry is handed over to the Airport Authority of India, additional land acquisition may not be required now. It is estimated that the construction of these two airports will cost around Rs. 500 to Rs. 600 crore each. Of this, 80 percent of the cost will be borne by the Center and 20 percent by the state government.

With the establishment of these airports, travel time in Telangana will be reduced. Economic activities will increase. The tourism sector will develop. New job opportunities will be available to locals and regional disparities will be reduced. Apart from that, the land prices in the areas bordering these two airports will be high.
