United Airlines introduces new domestic flight check-in rule

United Airlines introduces new domestic flight check-in rule

United Airlines: On June 3, 2025, United Airlines is enacting an updated check-in policy for domestic flights, hoping to curb last-minute boarding and delays as travel ramps up for summer.

New Check-in Time
Again, passengers without checked luggage can check-in up to 45 minutes before departure, compared with 30 minutes previously (for ones without bags). This is currently the same for passengers with bags, so it is really just an update.

Reasons for the Update
The reason for the update is to avoid last-minute boarding issues and to improve the overall airport experience. It allows gate agents to better manage seating and assist travelers when passengers check in earlier.

How This Affects You
If you try to check-in after the cutoff of 45 minutes, you’ll not be allowed to board your flight. The airline recommends that travelers arrive to the airport significantly ahead of time, as travel could get chaotic during the busier travel months.

Check-In Policy for International Flights

The check-in deadline for international routes is still 60 minutes before departure. Travelers departing abroad must still respect that timing in order to have a smooth boarding process.

Summer Travel Trends

The policy change occurs at a time of increased demand for air travel, in particular, during the holiday season like Memorial Day Weekend, when U.S. air passengers reached 3.61 Million, a 12% increase from pre-pandemic numbers.

The United Airlines check-in policy updates are intended to align boarding on domestic routes, and improve delays. In addition, travelers should prepare and plan ahead of time to comply with the new 45-minute check-in obligations to avoid missing their flight. Air passengers must plan ahead and stay abreast of airline practices in order to make travel seamless.
