Bigg Boss, which made its Hindi debut in 2006, is the oldest running television reality show in India. It has also been made in several Indian languages and has come a long way with lots of seasons. Hindi Bigg Boss is just starting its 19th season, while Malayalam Bigg Boss is already in its 7th. It has been produced in seven languages, with the Bengali version closing down in 2016 after two seasons. As of now, five languages are on air simultaneously.
Contrary to popular belief that the highest-rated Bigg Boss show is Hindi, this is not true. The TRP numbers were released officially by Endemol Shine India, makers of the show, at the end of the recently wound-up TRP war. The Malayalam edition with Mohanlal is the surprise leader.
With its TRP number of 12.1, Bigg Boss in Malayalam has outstripped Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada versions. Telugu is at TRP 11.1; Kannada Bigg Boss is at 10.9; the Tamil BiggBoss is hosted by Vijay Sethupathi and is at a TRP of, unfortunately, just 5.61.
TELEVISION RATINGS PROFILE (TRP) THAT MEASURES VIEWERSHIP. It is the measure of the percentage of a specific audience that will be watching a channel or program at that indicated time. TRP is important not only for producers and advertisers in the decision of price of a show but it also helps to determine if the viewers received any value from the show. The greater the TRP indicates a higher viewership and thus highest potential of selling advertising space.
Malayalam BiggBoss sits atop all other versions due to its increasing amount of viewership for regional content and star power of Mohanlal. Even with Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada versions available, the hard or drive and interest of audiences isn’t diminished by the format of the Malayalam version. This TRP victory represents that positioned first across the board. That contributes too to the overall appeal – and a growing state of mind of regional television outperforming national television at the same time.
With the combination of good programming and a connection to the people, Malayalam Bigg Boss continues to have important bench marks in viewership and proves that even national favorite shows can be surpassed by even the best regional adaptation.
