10 Deadliest Floods in Indian History That Shook the Nation

10 Deadliest Floods: Floods are a natural calamity, and India has witnessed many throughout its history. Today again India has once again witnessed floods in Uttarkashi. Uttarkashi cloudburst has damaged the entire village and taken many lives. Let’s now see the top 10 deadliest floods which has been recorded in Indian history.


1. Uttarakhand Floods:
The Uttarakhand Floods, which occurred in 2013, are one of the most dangerous floods that have been seen in recent times. It was caused by multiple cloud bursts, the melting of Chorabari glacier, and one of the main reasons for this is the eruption of the Mandakini river. This has led to massive flash floods and landslides in the region. According to the official reports, nearly 5,000 people died in this incident.

2. Bihar floods: 
The Bihar floods were been worst floods that have been recorded in 2007. Almost 40% of the state has been submerged during these floods. The main cause of these floods was heavy rainfall recorded which led to more than 1,200 deaths.


3. Mumbai Floods:
Mumbai floods have been another disaster in India. This was recorded in 2005, and the main reason for these floods was just 24 hours of rain, which ended drowning entire city. More than 14,000 homes were damaged, and almost 1000 people lost their lives.

4. Tamil Nadu Floods
Due to heavy rainfall Tamil Nadu floods were one of the dangerous floods recorded in Indian history in 2000. This was recorded in 2015, and more than 470 people have lost their lives. Because of this, floods affected almost 40,000 people lost their homes and their loved ones.

5. Kerala Floods:
Kerala has seen one of the worst floods in Indian history. In 2018, these floods damaged millions of people. According to the sources, around 400 people lost their lives. Following these floods in recent years, one more flood has hit Kerala’s Wayanad, which was recorded in 2024. This has damaged the entire village and taken many lives.

6. Jammu & Kashmir Floods: 
The Jammu and Kashmir Floods were caused by heavy rainfall that lasted more than one week. Due to these floods entire tourism and the state have been locked. Over 200 lives were lost in these floods, and a huge number of villages were destroyed in these floods.

7. Maharashtra Floods:
Maharashtra’s floods, which were recorded in 2021, were caused because of heavy rainfall and killed more than 250 people. According to the media reports, most of the people went missing after this incident. People who went missing are still not found.

8. Gujarat Floods:
With one of the most dangerous rainfalls in Indian history, Gujarat has seen the most dangerous floods in 2017. This has triggered entire villages, and more than 200 people have lost their lives.

9. Surat floods:
Gujarat has witnessed earlier also witnessed the same floods in the year 2006. The cause of these floods was the sudden release of water in the Tapti River from the Ukai dam. These floods led almost 80% of Surat to be submerged under water. Due to this human mistake, almost 200 lives were lost in this incident.

10. Uttarkhand floods:
One of the most dangerous and most watched floods in the world. This disaster was recorded in the Chamoli River. The main reason for these floods was that of Nanda Devi Glacier broke off. This ended up releasing a huge amount of water. A heavy amount of landslides were recorded, and almost 200 people were dead during this incident.
