2 Crore Thrown Out the Window, Corruption Unfolds In Bhubaneshwar

Bhubaneshwar: A man threw bundles of Rs 500 notes out of his apartment window at night. The people gathered there and were shocked to find out that it was all corrupt money. The incident took place in Odisha’s capital Bhubaneshwar on Tuesday night (May 27). Going into details, the ACB conducted a lightning raid on Baikunth Nath Sarangi, who was working as the chief engineer in the state Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Department, after allegations of embezzlement and corruption were received. During this time, he threw more than Rs 2 crore in cash from his house out of the windows.


 

The Odisha Vigilance Department conducted searches at 7 locations simultaneously. Searches were conducted at the houses of Baikuntha Nath, his family and close friends. A total of Rs. 2.1 crore in cash was seized in these raids, which took place in Angul, Bhubaneshwar and Pipili (Puri). A two-storey residential building in Karadgadiya area of ​​Angul, a Dumduma flat in Bhubaneshwar, another flat in Puri, a relative’s residence at Shiksha Kapada in Angul, Sarangi’s father’s building and office chamber. Huge assets were unearthed during the searches conducted by the vigilance. The officials were shocked to see the list of his illegal assets. Bundles of banknotes, huge amounts of gold, jewellery, documents related to lands and properties came to light. Officials said that he was addicted to embezzlement and had committed corruption.

When the vigilance officials reached Bhubaneshwar’s flat, they said that Baikuntha threw the bundles of notes hidden in Sarangi’s house out of the window. However, they said that the cash was recovered in the presence of witnesses. They said that most of the money found was in Rs. 500 notes, some in bundles of Rs. 200 and Rs. 100 notes. After this incident, the vigilance, which focused on the Chief Engineer’s Office and the relevant departments, registered several cases against him under the Prevention of Corruption Act. However, they said that the counting of the assets found in his house is ongoing and only Rs. 2.1 crore in cash has been found so far. Furthermore, a vigilance officer said that the investigation will reveal where he has his assets and bank lockers.
