5 Films That Were Banned:

1. India’s “Paanch” (2001)

Paanch was an gritty crime thriller written and directed by Anurag Kashyap, inspired by real events. Although of cinematic quality, the Indian censor board denied certification because it depicted drug addiction, violence, and moral looseness. Although never legally released in cinemas, the film achieved cult status with underground releases.


2. “The Master” (Philippines)

This 2012 film, starring Joaquin Phoenix and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, was reportedly about the origins of Scientology. Although distributed in other countries, it was met with strong resistance and banned in the Philippines for its purported criticism of religious practice, although no official reason was issued to the public.

3. “Unfreedom” (India, 2015)

Unfreedom by Raj Amit Kumar dealt with LGBTQ issues and religious extremism—two very sensitive issues in India. The censor board refused the film certification outright, saying the film could cause unrest. The film was released on international digital platforms later but censored in Indian theaters.

4. “The Interview” (USA, 2014)

This satirical comedy of the assassination of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has sparked worldwide outrage. Following cyberattacks and threats against cinemas, Sony Pictures dropped the film’s theatrical run. It then spread online, but the incident was a turning point for Hollywood’s struggle between art and geopolitics.

5. “Toofan” (Pakistan, 2020)

A movie that was speculated to tackled religious topics and political tales, Toofan was censored by the Pakistani authorities before its launch. It was considered too inflammatory and dangerous to the attitudes of the masses.
