Kerala Secretariat Onam: The Kerala Chief Minister welcomed the Onam feast annually to the Legislative Complex Hall, inviting a diverse guest list from all walks of society. Although the event was intended to highlight inclusivity and cultural coexistence, it has generated debate online regarding guest lists, representation, and protocol, together with one surprise viral moment that left Reddit in conversation.
Netizens questioned the invitation process’s transparency, particularly in relation to the use of the term “പൗരപ്രമുഖർ” (eminent citizens). Critics say that this transparent categorization requires more transparent criteria, especially when public money is at stake. Amongst the invitees who were seen in the event’s video is controversial Christian preacher Tangu, appearing at timestamps 0:42 and 1:27 standing behind Minister V.N. Vasavan. His appearance brought about questions regarding the selection of religious leaders and if fame or political affiliation is involved.
This issue is not confined to religious figures alone. Social media personalities, journalists, and celebrities were also in attendance in large numbers, raising questions about who has the right to speak for the public in such state-organized events. In contrast to state banquets elsewhere in the world, where the guest list is carefully managed to maintain protocol and balance, Kerala’s one seemed more loose; but also contentious.
The other common concern was the elevation of Christian clergy at the central table, seated next to high political figures such as the Chief Minister, Opposition Leader, or Speaker. Within a multicultural state comprising various religious and caste-based communities, this has brought about sentiments of exclusion among other stakeholders. A recent Facebook update by a Christian priest in which he pointed to the exclusion of other denominations and claimed religious superiority further fueled this perception.
In the midst of the grim debate, however, there was a moment of comic relief for Reddit users. Actor Bheeman Raghu’s stance in the video; with his hands on CM’s shoulder, hanging in theatrically, brought back memories of internet sensation Orry’s now-famous stance with Bollywood stars. Reddit users were quick to catch the resemblance, filling posts with memes and humorous tags like “Orry has competition in Thiruvananthapuram!” and “Bheeman Raghu becoming one with his inner Orry at the Onam sadya.”

The image has since become viral, putting a comedic spin on an otherwise controversial ceremony. A total of several hundred guests were invited, from top movie stars to neighborhood influencers. Though the Onam meal is meant to be a joyous celebration of togetherness, this year’s event has raised more general questions about inclusivity, optics, and accountability, as well as a couple of inadvertent giggles from Reddit.
