Ahmedabad Plane Crash:
An Air India flight (AI171), traveling from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, crashed on June 12, 2025, shortly after takeoff. The plane, a Boeing 787-8, was carrying 242 people, including passengers and crew. The tragic incident occurred near the Meghaninagar area, close to the Ahmedabad airport. Reports suggest over 100 fatalities, making it one of the deadliest recent air crashes in India.
The aircraft was commanded by Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, a highly experienced pilot with over 8,200 hours of flying time. The First Officer, Clive Kundar, had 1,100 hours of flight experience. Both pilots were among the twelve crew members onboard.
Details of the Crash
The plane departed from Ahmedabad at 1:39 PM from runway 23. Within minutes of takeoff, the pilots issued a MAYDAY call to air traffic control, indicating a serious emergency. The aircraft then crashed near the BJ Medical College hostel, a densely populated area.
Air India confirmed that out of the 242 onboard:
169 were Indian nationals
53 were British citizens
1 was a Canadian national
7 were Portuguese nationals
Emergency services were quickly deployed, and injured victims were taken to nearby hospitals. A helpline (1800 5691 444) was also set up for relatives seeking information.
The crash caused major damage to the BJ Medical College mess and hostel. Many resident doctors and students were inside having lunch. Eyewitnesses reported injuries among 150–200 people, including mess workers and doctors. Several were reported to have suffered serious burns and trauma.
The cause of the crash is under investigation. The incident has left the nation in shock, especially given the heavy casualties and loss of lives in a crowded civilian area.
