Carbon Foot Prosthesis: In partnership with the Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL), DRDO, researchers from AIIMS Bibinagar have created an innovative carbon fiber foot prosthesis that is domestically made and reasonably priced. AIIMS Executive Director Dr. Ahanthem Santa Singh and DRDL Director and Distinguished Scientist Dr. G A Srinivasa Murthy unveiled the prosthesis on Monday. Officials claim that the foot prosthesis has undergone biomechanical testing and can support loads of up to 125 kg with a suitable safety margin.

The new prosthesis targets highly active K3-level users and delivers top-tier performance at a significantly lower cost. The developers have designed three different models to accommodate various weight categories. Despite its affordability, the foot matches the performance of several international models, making it accessible to a broader population.
According to a press statement, the team expects the device to cost under ₹20,000 once mass production begins—a fraction of the current market price for imported prosthetics, which can go up to ₹2 lakh. Scientists from DRDL, in collaboration with industry partners and medical experts from AIIMS Bibinagar, jointly developed the advanced carbon fibre prosthetic foot.
