Air India Crew Member Caught Smuggling Gold Worth ₹1.41 Crore

Air India Crew: In a shocking announcement that has raised serious issues regarding the potential for involvement of airline crew members in illicit activities. A crew member of Air India was arrested Friday in Mumbai, allegedly attempting to smuggle ₹1.41 crore worth of foreign-origin gold. The event was discovered during a routine inspection after the plane. Which had arrived on flight AI-116 on from New York, was grounded for taxiing.


Gold Hidden Near the Baggage Area

Authorities state that the male crew member was able to conceal the gold around the baggage area. After the flight in order to avoid detection on the spot during the in-flight security sweeps. Officials later found the crew member’s 1.373 kilograms stash of gold in gold biscuits and bars stamped from international refineries. Asahi and Rand Refinery, among others.

Allegedly Part of Smuggling Ring

Investigations showed that the accused were likely part of a more extensive smuggling racket. Which is being run between India and the United States. The gold had been confiscated in New York and smuggled secretly to Mumbai with the aim of evading customs and earning massive profits by selling it in India’s black market.


Increasing Trend of Smuggling Via Airline Employees

This case has contributed to increased apprehension regarding the abuse of airline staff credentials and access rights for smuggling. Experts note that crew members enjoy more mobility across airports and are less targeted in customs inspections. And hence are prime targets for organized smuggling networks.

Authorities at Customs and the airline will remain vigilant

Following the incident, Air India stated that it is in complete co-operation with the authorities and has suspended the accused crew member pending further investigation. Airport officials strengthened the screening of airline employees and increased surveillance in and around aircraft and baggage handling areas.

This arrest is a wake-up call for the aviation industry to implement stronger in-house security and background checks on employment history.
