An Air India flight (AI 180) from San Francisco to Mumbai developed a technical snag early Tuesday morning. The plane, which was coming from the US, developed a fault in the left engine as it landed at Kolkata airport as scheduled, causing a delay in its flight from Kolkata to Mumbai. Passengers were deboarded after four hours, the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.
The flight took off from San Francisco Airport as scheduled and landed at Netaja Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata at 12:45 am on Monday. It was then that a technical problem was detected in the plane’s left engine. About four hours later, at 5:20 am, it was announced that the passengers needed to be deplaned. The captain explained to the passengers that this decision was taken in the interest of the safety of the flight.
A video of ground duty staff inspecting the left engine of the plane is going viral on social media. The plane was parked at the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport. It comes five days after an Air India flight crashed in Ahmedabad.
Air India flight AI-171 crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport to London Gatwick. There were 242 people on board, including 230 passengers, 10 cabin crew and two pilots.
All but one British citizen of Indian origin, Vishwas Kumar Ramesh, were killed in the fire in the horrific accident. The latest incident, which comes just five days after the Ahmedabad accident on June 12, has raised serious doubts about aviation safety.
Meanwhile, the investigation into the Air India plane crash is ongoing. In this accident, 241 people on board the plane lost their lives. More than 30 people in the BJ Medical College hostel building where the metal plane crashed lost their lives. The incident took place while the medical students were having lunch. After the accident, a huge fire broke out and the victims were burnt to ashes. With this, the bodies are being identified through DNA tests and handed over to the relatives.
