Amazon Prime Video, previously the pioneer for an advertisement-free streaming experience. Amazon Prime Video faces backlash since deciding to make advertisements part of its content. Beginning June 17, 2025, Prime Video membership in India will have members inured to minimal advertisements unless paying for the ability to view commercials-free.
Amazon notified its subscribers that TV programs and films on Prime Video will now have commercials. The company argues this will allow them to invest in good content while having fewer commercials than what would happen with normal TV and other streaming sites.
How Much Will Ad-Free Streaming Cost
If they wish to keep receiving an ad-free experience, customers will have to pay extra ₹699 per year. Or ₹129 as an add-on per month in addition to their current Prime membership charge. Amazon used to charge ₹999 as the ad-free add-on, but that has now been reduced, although there is no word yet regarding the duration of the offer.
User Backlash & Frustration
Subscribers have been infuriated at this change. They argued that Prime Video was marketed in the first place as an advertisement-free service. It is viewed by many customers as unfair to make viewers see advertisements along with their paid membership. Especially when other companies such as Netflix and Disney+ Hotstar offer ad-free services without charging extra.
Amazon’s Justification:
Amazon justifies its move on the basis that ad revenue will enable them to invest more in content and continue to expand the platform’s offerings. Opponents contend that Prime membership already comes with many paid services. And adding ads without cutting the base subscription fee appears to be a money grab.
With Amazon Prime Video headed towards an ad-supported model, the consumer is left wondering if it’s worth paying for their subscription anymore. Whether or not Amazon will change its business plan or user engagement will dwindle, only time will tell.
