Automatic Traffic Challans: Center Advises CCTV Setup

Automatic Traffic Challans: The Center is preparing to implement new reforms to prevent road accidents. It has advised states to install CCTV cameras to automatically issue challans for violation of traffic rules. It will provide incentives to those who scrap old vehicles. The Center has said that funds will be released in advance to states that implement these reforms. It has set a target of reducing road accidents by 50% by 2030. As part of this, it is planning to issue automatic traffic challans.

The Center recently sent a letter to all states. In this, it has instructed all states to implement major reforms in the fields of road transport, lands, urban planning, crop cultivation, etc. It has also said that incentives will be provided to the states that implement these reforms. The Center has instructed to implement these reforms by December 2025. For the implementation of the reforms, the Center has clarified that incentives will be released on a ‘first come, first serve’ basis. In this letter, the Center has made several key suggestions mainly related to the transport sector.

Key tips on old vehicles

In the wake of increasing pollution caused by old vehicles, the Centre has made key recommendations. It has announced that it will provide incentives for scrapping vehicles that are at least 15 years old and buying new vehicles. For this, the states have been divided into groups.

While Telangana is in Group B, Andhra Pradesh is in Group ‘A’. In this order, it has been announced that Rs. 200 crore will be provided to 7 states including AP in Group A for old vehicles

Similarly, it has been announced that Rs. 100 crore will be provided to 7 states including Telangana in Group ‘B’. If the obsolete government vehicles are scrapped, Rs. 50 thousand will be given to each of the first 500 vehicles. Rs. 60 thousand will be given to 501-1,000. This will be increased in this manner. The Center has announced that if the number of vehicles scrapped exceeds 6 thousand, Rs. 1 lakh will be given to each.

When it comes to private vehicles. Rs. 5 thousand will be given to each of the first 500 vehicles, Rs. 7,500 to 501-2,000 vehicles, increasing in this manner. Finally, if the number exceeds 5 thousand vehicles. Rs. 20 thousand will be given to each, the Center has said in the letter.

For the prevention of road accidents

The Center explained in the letter that 80 percent of road accidents in the country every year are caused by violation of traffic rules.

It has advised the states to set up electronic enforcement for road safety with the aim of reducing these to 50 percent by 2030. Also has asked the state governments to select cities with a population of at least 5 lakh for this scheme. It has also said that CCTV cameras should be installed on the roads. These should be connected to the traffic control room and monitored from there and vehicles violating the rules should be fined, the Center said. If the state government follows this, it is said that those who do not follow traffic rules may be automatically fined.
