B.R. Gavai: On May 14, one day after the current Chief Justice, Sanjiv Khanna, retires, Justice B.R. Gavai will take the oath of office as India’s next Chief Justice. By custom, the Chief Justice has proposed Justice Gavai as his successor to the Union Law Ministry. In order to name his replacement, the government had previously asked the Chief Justice for his nomination.
Since Justice Gavai is scheduled to retire in November, he will serve as India’s Chief Justice for around six months. Following Justice KG Balakrishnan, who was promoted to the nation’s top judicial position in 2007, he will be the second Dalit to serve as Chief Justice.
Justice BR Gavai Background:
Born in Amravati, Maharashtra, he became a lawyer in 1985 and collaborated with Raja Bhonsale, a former Advocate General and Maharashtra High Court judge. From 1987 until 1990, he practiced independently at the Bombay High Court. After that, he mostly practiced constitutional and administrative law before the Bombay High Court’s Nagpur Bench.
In August 1992, he was named Additional Public Prosecutor and Assistant Government Pleader for the Bombay High Court’s Nagpur bench. In 2000, B.R. Gavai was appointed Public Prosecutor and Government Pleader for the Nagpur bench. In 2003, Justice Gavai was promoted to Additional Judge of the High Court, and in 2005, he became a permanent judge. In 2019, he was promoted to the Supreme Court.

Justice B.R. Gavai has participated in some significant rulings throughout his tenure as a Supreme Court judge. These include the Supreme Court’s ruling that the electoral bonds program is unlawful and the ruling that upholds the centre’s 2016 decision to demonetize.
