Betrayal Jackpot: A man from Canada is suing his ex-girlfriend, alleging that she stole his CA$5 million (about Rs 30 crore) lottery prize with her partner.
According to Winnipeg resident Lawrence Campbell, he purchased the winning ticket in 2024 but was unable to collect the award because he did not have a valid ID. He urged his then-girlfriend, Krystal Ann McKay, to claim the win from Western Canada Lottery Corporation (WCLC) on his behalf, as recommended by lottery officials.
According to Mr. Campbell, he had complete faith in Ms. McKay. He informed the media that they were living together and had been in a “loyal, committed and promising romantic partnership” for more than a year and a half. He let her deposit the winnings in her name because he didn’t have a bank account either.
At first, everything appeared to be OK. The pair posed for publicity shots holding an enormous check and filmed a video outside a Shoppers Drug Mart to confirm the win. The win was publicly characterized as Mr. Campbell’s birthday present to Ms. McKay, even though she didn’t appear overly excited in the photos.
Campbell Statements:
“She had been asking me for three weeks to get a ticket, but I never went and got one,” stated Mr. Campbell. “Then we drove by one, and I was like ‘OK, I might as well go get you one right now.'” Mr. Campbell claims that Ms. McKay vanished within a few days. She didn’t go back to their hotel room together and stop talking. According to the lawsuit, she was “in bed with another guy” when he finally located her.

The WCLC and Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries are also named in Mr. Campbell’s action, which was submitted to the Court of King’s Bench in Manitoba. He claims that the agencies failed to warn him about the dangers of letting someone else claim a lottery prize on his behalf and gave him bad advice. “This case is about systemic karma versus the system itself,” Mr. Campbell’s attorney stated. “A situation created, or at least enabled, by the state-owned lottery corporations administering claims in Manitoba.”
