Bonalu 2025: Devotees across Telangana will celebrate the Bonalu festival with deep devotion starting Thursday. Since forming the separate state, the Telangana government has recognized Bonalu as a state festival, highlighting its cultural and religious importance. As part of the festivities, devotees will offer Bonam and pay homage to the goddesses at temples across the state.
Month-Long Bonalu Festival Begins:
Devotees across Telangana will begin celebrating the Bonalu festival with great devotion on Thursday. After forming the separate state, the Telangana government declared Bonalu a state festival to honor its cultural and religious significance. As part of the month-long celebrations, devotees will offer bonam and perform oblations to the goddesses at temples statewide. The government has arranged special facilities at major temples and taken steps to ensure the comfort and safety of worshippers.
Historic Bonalu Traditions in Hyderabad:
Quli Qutub Shah launched the tradition of starting the Bonalu festival at Golconda Fort during his reign. Today, the Telangana state government carries forward that legacy by officially organizing and overseeing the festivities. As part of the ceremonial offerings, the government presents silk clothes to the goddess. The Sri Jagadambika Trust Board, operating under the Endowments Department, has already begun making arrangements to ensure the smooth conduct of the celebrations at the fort.
The Bonalu Jatara will begin in Telangana on Thursday and continue until July 24. Priests will perform nine special pujas throughout the month-long festival. Lakhs of devotees from various districts and Hyderabad city are expected to participate in the rituals. To manage the large crowds, officials have started preparing key areas in and around the Golconda Fort, especially the Akkanna Madanna offices and Bodyguard Lines, to accommodate devotees and facilitate the religious events without disruption.

Free Entry on Sundays & Thursdays:
Devotees will launch the Bonalu festival’s opening ceremony on the first day with a traditional procession of the goddess’s water pots from Langar House Square. Simultaneously, priests will lead the ghattam and idol procession from the temple priest’s house in Chotabazar. Another group will start the first bonam procession from Banjara Darwaza. All three processions will reach Golconda Fort, where the temple trust will perform special pujas and bonam offerings.
As the Bonalu Jatara unfolds inside the fort, the Central Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), which manages the site, has implemented several temporary changes. ASI has waived entry fees on Sundays and Thursdays during the festival. The Telangana State Tourism Department, which organizes two daily light and sound shows at the fort, has adjusted the schedule. It has canceled the first show on Sundays and Thursdays, while it will continue the second show at 8 PM as usual.
