The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has approved a major change. From 2026, Class 10 students can take their board exams twice in a year. The first exam is mandatory. The second is optional for improvement.
This move follows the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. NEP suggested reducing the pressure of “high-stakes” exams by giving students another chance to perform better.
CBSE Chairman Rahul Singh confirmed that all students must appear for the first exam in February. After results in April, students can choose to improve scores in up to three subjects.
These include Science, Maths, Social Science, and two language papers.
The second exam, scheduled for May, will allow eligible students to improve their marks. CBSE will announce the second exam results in June.
Students must appear in at least three subjects in the first exam to qualify for the second. Those who miss or fail in more than two subjects will be placed in the ‘Essential Repeat’ category.
Such students can appear only in the next academic year. Those who fail in one or two subjects will be placed in the ‘Compartment’ category. They can write those papers in the second exam window.
Students will now get three chances to clear compartment exams. The first attempt will merge with the improvement exam in June. There will be no separate exam in July from 2026 onwards.
The new plan helps students reduce exam stress. It gives them a fair chance to improve performance without waiting an entire year.
