Chennai Metro to Soon Install Free Drinking Water ATMs

Free Water ATMs: The Chennai Metro Water Board plans to install free water ATMs in busy city areas as part of a major public welfare initiative to provide clean drinking water, especially benefiting commuters and daily wage workers.


In Phase 1, the board will place 50 water vending machines at strategic locations such as beaches, parks, temples, bus hubs, terminals, and marketplaces. To ensure an uninterrupted water supply, each machine will connect to a 3,000-liter tank, be monitored by CCTV, and be linked directly to the metro water network. Users can access either one liter or 150 milliliters of filtered water from each machine.

Free Water ATMs to be installed in:
Officials are actively planning to expand the project to Manali, having already selected five to six locations each in initial zones like Teynampet and Kodambakkam. Suggested sites include MMD Park (Mattur), Loop Road (Pattinapakkam), Kapaleeshwarar Temple, Vadapalani Bus Stand, and Koyambedu Market.

The program is expected to be inaugurated soon by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. While the initiative has received a positive response, officials emphasize that regular maintenance will be crucial for its success. Additionally, the second phase will add fifty more water ATMs.
