China: The Chinese embassy in Bangladesh has issued a strong warning to its citizens. It has advised them to be alert to online matchmaking. The demand for foreign brides has increased due to the gender imbalance and declining marriages in China. However, due to this, Bangladeshi women are being trafficked in the name of marriage. It has warned that illegal marriages will lead to serious legal consequences. Human trafficking crimes are punishable by life imprisonment or even death in Bangladesh.
About 30 million Chinese men are unable to find brides. Such people are called left-over men. The demand for foreign brides has increased due to the declining number of marriages in China.
According to a recent report by The Daily Star, cases of Bangladeshi women being sold in China in the name of marriage are increasing. Criminal gangs are trafficking these Bangladeshi women. It said that many of these marriages are being arranged illegally and through exploitative means. The Chinese Embassy revealed that such marriages can lead to serious legal consequences.
According to Chinese law, marriage agencies that facilitate cross-border marriage services are banned. It also prohibits engaging in such activities as cross-border marriages for profit and through fraud. The Chinese Embassy has urged victims of sexual relations and marriage scams to immediately report them to Chinese authorities. It has also warned that those involved in such illegal marriages in Bangladesh may be arrested under human trafficking charges.
According to Bangladesh’s Anti-Human Trafficking Act and Penal Code, those who traffic people are sentenced to a minimum of 7 years in prison. Also, in some cases, life imprisonment and even death penalty are imposed. Those who instigate trafficking are sentenced to 3 to 7 years in prison and a fine of 20,000 Bangladeshi Takas, which is more than Rs. 15 thousand in our Indian currency. Such networks have also trafficked Bangladeshi women to India. In 2021, Dhaka police arrested 11 accused who used TikTok to lure women into the sex trade.
