Civil Aviation Minister: In the wake of the horrific June 12, 2025, Air India Flight AI-171 crash near Ahmedabad. India’s latest Civil Aviation Minister, Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu was quick with words of condolence. The tragedy which resulted in over 270 passengers on board and on the ground has left India mourning and the government in a hurry to respond.
After the accident, Minister Naidu was driven to deep regret and assured members of the public that all the emergency facilities had been put on alert. Referring to the accident as “one of the darkest days in Indian aviation.” He ensured that the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) had been dispatched immediately to the accident scene to carry out investigations.
Along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Naidu attended the crash location and visited victims after they received treatment at Ahmedabad’s Civil Hospital. His personal familiarity with grieving families provided both private comfort and public credibility. “I have had a parent die untimely, so I can feel their pain,” said Naidu.
Naidu reported that one of the black boxes of one of the airplanes had been recovered. And retrieval of the second black box was in progress. He reiterated the fact that analysing the flight data would be important to determine what had gone wrong and to try and avoid future tragedies like this one.
In a major announcement, the minister announced an aviation safety and investigation multi-agency committee of the DGCA. Represented by Airports Authority of India (AAI), Air Force, intelligence agencies and the States. This Committee would review the existing procedures in aviation and provide recommendations for amendments with the aim of improving safety for aviation near airports.
Minister Naidu kept entire transparency in the inquiry process and promised further enhancement of India’s air safety infrastructure. His response, marked by sympathy and reaction, attempts to rebuild confidence in air transport in a moment of national grief.
