Delhi Hailstorm: After several days of extreme heat, Delhi and its neighbouring cities are now facing heavy hailstorms. The heavy hailstorms are in cities like Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, and other nearby cities. This hailstorm is causing chaos in the city, and a huge traffic blockage has also occurred.
10 key highlights on Delhi Hailstorm.
1. A sudden downpour in Delhi on Wednesday night led to two deaths—a 22-year-old man and a disabled person, and left at least 11 others injured, police told the media. The severe hailstorm wreaked havoc across the city, toppling trees and disrupting traffic on major roads, including the Delhi-Noida, Delhi-Ghaziabad, and Delhi-Gurugram highways. Social media was flooded with videos and images showing trees crashing onto moving vehicles. One tree even fell on a parked car on Mathura Road.
2. The intense rain and thunderstorm forced authorities to reroute at least thirteen flights from Delhi airport on Wednesday. Sources informed the media that the weather severely disrupted flight operations, with 12 planes diverted to Jaipur and one international flight redirected to Mumbai.
3. The hailstorm and thunderstorm late Wednesday night damaged Delhi’s electrical infrastructure, cutting power to several parts of the city. BSES’s BRPL and BYPL reported that falling trees and branches damaged power lines, triggering outages across multiple areas, especially in northern Delhi, including Bawana, Narela, Jahangirpuri, Civil Lines, Shakti Nagar, Model Town, Wazirabad, and Dhirpur.
4. Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (DDL) stated that it temporarily shut off electricity in some regions to prevent electrocution. Falling trees and branches damaged equipment by toppling onto power lines, which caused the outages.
5. The hailstorm and heavy rain damaged overhead equipment and blocked tracks on parts of the Delhi Metro network, disrupting services on the Red, Yellow, and Pink Lines. A Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) representative confirmed that strong winds and debris fell on the tracks near Shaheed Nagar, Jahangirpuri, and Nizamuddin stations, which forced officials to limit metro operations in those areas.
6. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded wind speeds of 79 kmph at Safdarjung, 74 kmph at Palam, 78 kmph at Pragati Maidan, and 65 kmph at Pitampura as strong gusts and dust storms swept through Delhi. IMD also reported that Safdarjung received 12.2 mm of rain between 5:30 and 8:30 p.m., while Mayur Vihar and Pitampura recorded 13 mm and 5 mm of rainfall, respectively.
7. The Delhi Traffic Police alerted the public on social media about traffic jams caused by uprooted trees. For instance, a tree that fell across the P S Nizamuddin police station blocked traffic on Mathura Road between Neela Gumbad and Ashram.
8. The Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) at Palika Kendra reported receiving thirteen tree fall complaints in the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) area alone. Tree branches fell in several places, including the loop to Akshardham Road, Sikandra Road, Firoz Shah Road, Vikas Marg, and Akshardham Road. A billboard also collapsed near the Laxmi Nagar red light on Vikas Marg.

The flight crew safely landed the plane, and officials grounded it afterward. Passengers screamed, cried, and prayed during the terrifying moments. While officials haven’t issued an official statement yet, some passengers said the turbulence damaged the plane’s nose.
