Delhi-NCR is once again grappling with severe air pollution, as thick smog envelops the region, leading to hazardous air quality levels. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has provided insights into the meteorological conditions contributing to this environmental crisis.
The IMD attributes the current smog to a combination of factors, including calm winds, low mixing height, and the absence of significant rainfall. These conditions hinder the dispersion of pollutants, leading to their accumulation near the ground level. As a result, the Air Quality Index (AQI) has escalated to ‘very poor’ levels, with certain areas recording AQI values exceeding 400, indicating a ‘severe’ category. This deterioration in air quality poses serious health risks, particularly for individuals with respiratory conditions.
Several anthropogenic activities exacerbate the pollution levels in Delhi-NCR. The burning of crop residue in neighboring states, vehicular emissions, construction dust, and industrial activities are significant contributors. Additionally, the practice of garbage burning in open spaces further deteriorates air quality. The IMD emphasizes the need for effective management of these activities to mitigate their impact on air quality.
Exposure to the current levels of air pollution can lead to respiratory problems, eye irritation, and fatigue. Vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions, are at heightened risk. The IMD advises residents to limit outdoor activities, wear protective masks, and utilize air purifiers indoors. Authorities have also been urged to implement stricter regulations on pollution sources and enhance public awareness regarding air quality issues.
The IMD forecasts that the prevailing meteorological conditions will persist in the coming days, potentially prolonging the smog episode. However, the department anticipates an improvement in air quality with the onset of stronger winds and possible rainfall, which are expected to aid in dispersing the accumulated pollutants. Residents are advised to stay informed through official updates and take necessary precautions to safeguard their health.
