Dilsukhnagar Bomb Blast Case: Hyderabad’s Dilsukhnagar was exploded by two bomb blasts on February 21, 2013. Panic situation created among people and ran away for their lives.The terrorist group Indian Mujahideen later claimed responsibility. In the explosions 18 people were killed and injured 131 others. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) took over the case and arrested five suspects.
Two bombs exploded within a span of few minutes at a busy commercial area in Dilsukhnagar.These blasts caused massive destruction and left bodies and debris scattered. Eyewitnesses described the scene as horrifying with smoke, fire and chaos everywhere.
The NIA quickly launched an investigation. It identified five members as main culprits and they are Yasin Bhatkal, Asadullah Akhtar, Zia-ur-Rehman, Tehseen Akhtar and Aijaz Shaikh. They were arrested and charged with terrorism, murder and conspiracy.
The trial took place in a special NIA court. The court found the five accused guilty on December 13, 2016.Six days later i.e, on December 19, the court sentenced them to death. Another key accused Riyaz Bhatkal remains absconding.
The convicts appealed to the Telangana High Court but on April 8, 2025, the court upheld the death sentence. The verdict reaffirmed the severity of their crime.
Hyderabad has been a target of multiple terror attacks.A bomb blast was happened at Mecca Masjid in 2017 and nine people were killed. In the same year two more blasts at Lumbini Park and Gokul Chat claimed 42 lives. Terrorist groups find Hyderabad strategic due to its diverse population and growing economy. Security agencies believe sleeper cells operate within the city.
Hyderabad authorities increased security after the Dilsukhnagar blasts. Thousands of CCTV cameras were installed across the city. A command control center was set up in Banjara Hills for real time monitoring. Advanced night vision cameras helps in identifying threats even in low light conditions.
The Dilsukhnagar blasts remained as one of the deadliest attacks in Hyderabad’s history. The case serves as a reminder of the need for constant vigilance and strong counter terrorism efforts.
