Vijay Mallya birthday party:
In 2015, businessman Vijay Mallya celebrated his 60th birthday with a grand party at his Kingfisher Villa in Goa. The event lasted two days and reportedly cost more than \$2 million (over ₹16 crore). Over 200 guests, including global celebrities, attended this luxurious celebration.
The party featured top-notch arrangements, including fireworks and live music performances. Spanish pop star Enrique Iglesias and Indian singer Sonu Nigam performed at the event. Interestingly, Sonu Nigam didn’t charge for his performance, as revealed by Mallya later.
Guests were not only treated to entertainment but also accommodated in the nearby Taj Hotel, ensuring complete comfort. Mallya’s son, Siddharth, also joined the celebrations as he had just stepped away from his own business to support his father.
Despite the lavish nature of the party, the event attracted criticism. At the time, Mallya had already been declared bankrupt and his airline, Kingfisher Airlines, had shut down. Reports suggest that advisors warned him against holding such an extravagant party and instead suggested a low-key celebration in London, where he owns a country estate.
Still, Mallya insisted on enjoying life, which led to increased public outrage and criticism from authorities, including the then RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan. In a later interview, Mallya admitted that his 60th birthday celebration drew a lot of negative attention. He clarified that several misunderstandings were floating around about his lifestyle and financial situation.
Mallya also expressed regret over the failure of his airline and said he had made four settlement offers to the banks, but none were accepted.
