Egg Prices Hit Record High: Egg prices in the U.S. have surged again, reaching a record high of $6.23 per dozen in March 2025. This increase came even though wholesale prices dropped and there were no new bird flu outbreaks at egg farms. Many expected prices to fall after President Donald Trump predicted a decrease.
Record Egg Price in the US:
Demand for eggs is usually high until Easter, which is on April 20 this year. That means prices are likely to stay high for a while longer. Some stores, especially in California, reported egg prices above $12 per dozen.
Bird Flu Still Impacting Egg Supply
Earlier in 2025, egg prices jumped due to bird flu outbreaks. Over 30 million egg-laying chickens were killed in January and February to stop the disease. In March, only 2.1 million birds were culled, and none were from egg farms. Still, many farms are struggling to return to normal production. Chickens take around six months to start laying eggs again after being raised.
Since the start of the bird flu outbreak, more than 168 million birds have been slaughtered. The virus spreads easily through wild bird droppings, making it hard to control. It has also affected other animals like dairy cows.
President Trump tried to take credit for the drop in wholesale prices and said his plan to protect egg farmers will help in the long term. However, experts believe it will take time for these measures to show results.
In January 2023, egg prices had already peaked at $4.82 before dropping to $2.04 by August. Now, they are rising again due to ongoing supply issues and high demand.
Both consumers and businesses will likely have to wait a bit longer before seeing lower egg prices in stores. For now, eggs remain a costly staple in American kitchens.
