Elevated highway corridor through Nallamala Forest

The union government has approved the proposal to build an elevated high corridor through the Nallamala forest, which is known for its picturesque hill ranges, serene Krishna River, captivating waterfalls, and an abundance of wildlife. The corridor will connect Hyderabad with the temple town of Srisailam in Andhra Pradesh.

The Center has authorized a plan to build the elevated highway corridor at a cost of ₹7,700 crore. The total length of this highway corridor is going to be 45.42 km apart from the suspension bridge over the Krishna river.

Proposal Details:
Only a two-lane road currently runs through the Nallamala Hills between Kalwakurthy and Srisailam. It’s a little ghat road with multiple twists amid the thick forest. It is causing accidents by endangering not only the passengers but also the animals that cross the road, particularly at night. Vehicles traveling through the jungle have ran over animals on multiple occasions, the official stated.

The Amrabad Tiger Reserve is a protected tiger sanctuary that includes the whole 63-kilometer woodland tract. In addition, it is home to a number of wild animals, such as leopards, bears, and wild boars. He also stated, “To ensure the safety of both travelers and wildlife, the Nallamala forest area is currently closed to traffic after 9 p.m.”

The Center gave permission for building a four-lane elevated highway corridor on the Nallamala woodland range because of the growing traffic on this route every year. Congress lawmaker Chikkudu Vamsi Krishna, who represents the Achampet assembly constituency, which includes the Nallamala forest area, confirmed the center’s plan. He stated that the elevated highway corridor will be built 30 feet above the ground to ensure safer and smoother traffic flow and prevent any disturbance to the wildlife.

Telangana Government:
To ensure that the elevated highway corridor complies with all safety and environmental regulations, the Telangana forest department is collaborating closely with the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and the Ministry of Road Transport.

According to Vamsi Krishna, the highway will start from Brahmanapalli in the Achampet mandal (block) of the Nagarkurnool district and travel via the tribal settlements of Mannanur, Kunchonimoola, Durvasula Cheruvu, Farhabad, Vatuvarlapalli, and Domalapenta. Between Domalapenta and Srisailam, there is the Krishna River. Over here, the government is planning to construct a suspension bridge across the river.
