When cooled to near absolute zero and tuned with magnetic fields, these materials form topological superconducting nanowires with Majorana Zero Modes (MZMs) at their ends. These MZMs store quantum information through ‘parity,’ based on the number of electrons in the wire.

The Future of Quantum Computing

Microsoft’s approach to quantum computing aims to build a fault-tolerant prototype (FTP) of a scalable quantum computer within years. This ambitious goal is part of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Underexplored Systems for Utility-Scale Quantum Computing (US2QC) program. The Majorana 1 chip marks a pivotal moment in the transition from scientific exploration to practical quantum computing, bringing us closer to realizing the era of transformative quantum technology.
