Eye Doctor Tells Couple Not To Marry Due To Poor Vision, Internet Reacts

A Bengaluru couple had a bizarre and uncomfortable experience during a simple eye checkup, which later caused them to have a large reaction on social media. The couple shared their experience on Reddit, indicating that the eye doctor had made a number of odd and unscientific statements that, for some reason or another, connected their myopia (short-sightedness) with marriage and having children.

The husband, who is in IT, stated he had gone to an eye clinic for a simple scheduled appointment. He indicated he was disclosed to about ten hours screentime per day. In his post, the doctor started the examination by asking personal questions that were not entirely necessary or relevant to the appointment with regards to where he and his wife were from.

Proceeding after the uncomfortable personal conversation, the doctor warned him about his eye condition, which was cylindrical power of about -2.5 and astigmatism. He then told the man that if his screentime lifestyle continued, he would have a serious problem with his eyes. This shocked the man and he felt like it was like “fear-mongering” especially considering that the doctor even could possibly represent that this man would not be able to carry out his profession, at all.

But the situation became even more awkward during his wife’s eye examination. The doctor asked him if he was her husband and asked him back into the examination room. What the doctor said next shocked them both.

“Didn’t you get any advice regarding marriage? Two people with myopia should not ever marry. You kids will have poor vision from an early age. Think before children,” according to the post.

The couple was shocked. He called the comment inappropriate, unscientific and unprofessional. He explained that no doctor should ever make someone feel guilty about getting married or having children, especially for something so common place and managed like myopia.

What is Myopia?
Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a common vision condition in which faraway objects look blurry while close objects can be seen clearly. It’s usually caused by genetics, extended screentimes, or environmental causes – but most often treated with corrective lenses such as glasses, contact lenses or surgery.
