Fact Check: Is PM Modi Govt Giving Free Laptops to Students?

In recent times, a viral message has been circulating on social media claiming that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government is providing free laptops to students under a special scheme. The message also includes a website link where students are encouraged to apply for these laptops. However this claim is false.

No Official Scheme Exists

The Government of India has not announced any official scheme named “Pradhan Mantri Free Laptop Yojana” or any similar initiative. The Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check team has repeatedly clarified that such claims are misleading and that no such scheme is being implemented by the central government.

Additionally, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has issued warnings about such fake messages. They have urged students and parents to avoid falling for scams that claim to provide free laptops in the name of the government.

Beware of Fake Websites

Many fake websites are designed to look like official government portals. These sites ask students to enter their personal details in the hope of receiving a free laptop. In reality, these fraudulent websites collect sensitive information that could be misused for identity theft or financial fraud.

Students should always verify such information from official sources such as:

– Press Information Bureau (PIB): www.pib.gov.in

– AICTE Official Website: www.aicte-india.org

– Government Portals: www.india.gov.in

State-Level Laptop Distribution Programs

While the central government does not offer free laptops, some state governments have their own laptop distribution programs. For example:

– Uttar Pradesh: The state government has distributed laptops to meritorious students in the past.

– Tamil Nadu: The state government has also provided free laptops to students under specific schemes.

However, these programs are managed at the state level and are not related to any central government initiative.

How to Avoid Falling for Fake Schemes

1. Verify Information: Always check government websites before believing any claims.

2. Do Not Share Personal Information: Avoid entering your details on unknown websites.

3. Report Fake Messages: If you come across such misleading claims, report them to PIB Fact Check or the cybercrime department.

The claim that PM Modi’s government is offering free laptops to students is false. There is no such scheme at the national level. Students should be cautious and avoid falling for fake websites or misleading messages. Always verify information from trusted government sources before taking any action.
