Fine Rice Shortage Hits Telangana Ration Shops

Fine Rice Shortage Hits Telangana Ration Shops

Telangana Ration Shops: The Telangana government launched the fine rice distribution scheme with high expectations. But the implementation is slow. Beneficiaries are raising concerns at ration shops. Due to the pressure, dealers put up “No Stock” boards and some even closed their shops.

Shortages in Ration Shops: Fine rice stocks run out quickly in many ration shops. As soon as they arrive, dealers distribute them immediately. But many beneficiaries say they have not received their share. The government announced the scheme, and ration card holders eagerly visit the shops. But they hear that stocks have finished or will arrive soon. This situation has caused frustration among the public.

Reasons for the Delay

Insufficient allocations from MLS (Mandated Local Supply) points create problems. Authorities have not ensured a full-scale movement of rice. Reports suggest that urban areas receive only 30% of the required stock, while rural areas get around 50%. Delays in rice supplies at ration shops add to the dealers’ struggles. Since rice arrives in small batches, dealers distribute it in parts. Meanwhile, cardholders keep visiting ration shops, hoping to collect their share.

Scheme Launched on Ugadi

The Telangana government introduced the Fine Rice Scheme for economically weaker sections. The main goal is to provide high-quality fine rice to the poor. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy launched the scheme on March 30, 2025, in Huzurnagar. The distribution began on April 1, 2025, through ration shops across the state.

The government excluded Hyderabad from the distribution due to local body MLC elections. Despite the additional financial burden, officials launched this scheme to support the poor. The state requires an estimated 2 lakh metric tons of rice every month. This scheme will benefit 2.85 crore ration card holders across Telangana.

Government Allocates ₹2,800 Crore for the Scheme

Telangana Ration Shops: Each beneficiary will receive 6 kg of fine rice per month under this scheme. The government allocated an additional ₹2,800 crore for its implementation. Every ration cardholder in the state will benefit. Authorities consider this initiative a high priority and aim to resolve the distribution challenges soon.
